The General tab

The General tab in the Chapter Properties dialog allows you to specify the size of the pages within the chapter as well as the position of the chapter window when it is viewed.

Note:
Every page within a chapter is the same size. If you want to have pages of different sizes within your publication, you must create them in separate chapters.

To edit the General tab settings:

  1. Use the Chapter Title box if you want to change the name of the Chapter. Click inside the box and type the new name you want to give to the chapter. The name can be as long and descriptive as you like. By default, the first chapter is always named Chapter 1. You can change this to any name you require. You can also rename the Chapter in the Organizer tree if you prefer.

Note:
The name of the chapter is displayed beside the chapter icon in the Objects tab of the Page Organiser as well as in the Title bar of the window when the chapter is displayed in a window.

  1. Use the Page Size panel to specify a page size for the pages in this chapter. Page sizes for standard screen resolutions are provided as preset options (e.g. 640 x 480) but you can choose any page size you wish via the Custom size option.

Note:
Each new page you add to this chapter will be created at the page size set here.

  1. Use the First View panel to set the page position when the page size is greater than the window in which the page is displayed. There are a variety of preset positions you can choose from. By default the Top Left option is selected – this maintains backward compatibility with old publications created before this option was available.

Note:
When a page is larger than the window in which it is displayed, scrollbars will automatically appear in the window so that users can move around the page.

  1. Use the Pages can be resized horizontally option if you want the publication to fit the size of the window or screen it is displayed in. This is also important for resizable publications as it lets the user resize the width of the window in which the page is displayed and still display the whole width of the page. You can set the Maximum Width and Minimum Width that a user can stretch or shrink the window. By default, the maximum and minimum width boxes are set to the same size as you have selected in the Page Size panel (see point 2 above).

Note:
if you do not want there to be a limit to the maximum width for the publication then simply click the checkbox next to Maximum Width so that it is off. This will ensure the publication always fills the width of the screen or window it is displayed in and is useful to cover the range of different screen sizes available on smartphones and other mobile devices. We always recommend you set the minimum width to an appropriate figure or the publication could effectively disappear.

  1. Use the Pages can be resized vertically option if you want the user to be able to resize the height of the window in which the page is displayed. You can set the Maximum Height and Minimum Height that a user can stretch or shrink the window. By default, the maximum and minimum height boxes are set to the same size as you have selected in the Page Size panel (see point 2 above).

Note:
if you do not want there to be a limit to the maximum height for the publication then simply click the checkbox next to Maximum Height so that it is off. This will ensure the publication always fills the height of the screen or window it is displayed in and is useful to cover the range of different screen sizes available on smartphones and other mobile devices.

  1. Use the Maintain aspect ratio option if you want to retain the original proportions (aspect ratio) when the user resizes the window. The system will automatically readjust the aspect ratio as the user stretches or shrinks the window.

  2. Click on the Apply button to save your changes.
